Traditional Shotokan Karate — Proven, Powerful, Purposeful
At Orlando Private Karate (OPK) we practice Shotokan karate handed down from Masatoshi Nakayama to Hiroshi Shoji to Yasuyoshi Saito, the founder of Japan Karate Do International (JKI). OPK instructor, David (Dave) Melton, has been training with Sensei Rafael Sevilla (JKI-Central Florida), Sensei Saito, and Sensei Mazzuca for 12 years and has attained the rank of Sandan (3rd Degree Blackbelt) within the JKI organization. Today, karate-do is practiced as a martial art, sport, and proven method of self-defense. Like other Japanese martial arts, the ultimate aim of karate-do is the perfection of the character of its participants. Through intense training, karateka learn self-control, mental and physical self-discipline, and the development of highly effective self-defense and fighting techniques.

Funakoshi’s Wisdom
“True karate is this: that in daily life one's mind and body be trained and developed in a spirit of humility, and that in critical times, one be devoted utterly to the cause of justice.”
-Gichin Funakoshi
